ABP 2015: Week 19

Last week was really good with many caught birds. Late migrants like Bramblings showed up, as well as thrushes like Dusky Thrush, White’s Thrush and Pale Thrush, of which we caught the latter two. Additionally a rare species for the park was recorded, a flock of Common Starlings. This species is recently spreading its range eastward. A further highlight were the Chestnut-flanked White-eyes, of which we caught four at once.

During our daily crane countings we discovered a pair of Siberian Cranes coming to roost one evening. This species is a rare but more or less regular migrant at Muraviovka Park. Globally, just two populations of this critically endangered species are recognized (one in West Siberia and one in Yakutia).

On Friday we visited the Pedagogical University of Blagoveschensk to talk to Russian students, who are studying German. We talked about our studies and the Amur Bird Project and hopefully some of them will visit us here in the Park to see what we are working on. Some students already took the opportunity today to come to the Park, because we celebrated the annual crane festival this weekend. The nice weather brought many visitors and we could show them some very nice species. The Park´s staff took them to excursions and talked about the importance of this unique habitat and the protection of cranes. Furthermore, several school classes visited the Park and got the opportunity to see the birds we caught close up. 

Die letzte Woche brachte uns gute Fangzahlen. Die ersten Bergfinken, sowie weitere Drosselarten wie Rostflügeldrossel, Erddrossel und Fahldrossel sind im Park angekommen, wovon wir die letzten beiden Arten auch gefangen haben. Außerdem konnten wir seltene Gäste hier im Park beobachten - eine Truppe von Staren. Diese Art breitet sich derzeit ostwärts aus. Ein weiteres Highlight waren vier Rostflanken-Brillenvögel, die wir an einem Tag gefangen haben.

Bei unserer täglichen Kranichzählung konnten wir an einem Abend zwei Schneekraniche beobachten. Diese Kranichart ist ein seltener aber regelmäßiger Gast im Muraviovka Park. Weltweit gibt es nur noch zwei Populationen, in West Sibirien und Yakutien, der Bestand gilt als vom Aussterben bedroht.

Am Freitag besuchten wir die Pädagogische Universität in Blagoweschensk, um uns mit den russischen DeutschstudentenInnen auszutauschen. Wir berichteten von unserem Studium und dem Amur Bird Project und wir hoffen, dass uns einige Studenten im Park besuchen kommen werden, damit sie uns bei der wissenschaftlichen Arbeit über die Schulter schauen können. Einige StudentenInnen nutzten gleich die Chance, dieses Wochenende in den Park zu kommen, da gestern und heute das jährliche Kranichfest stattfand. Das gute Wetter sorgte dafür, dass viele BesucherInnen in den Park kamen und wir ihnen einige schöne Arten zeigen konnten. Außerdem waren auch mehrere Schulklassen vor Ort, sodass sie die Vögel in echt und ganz aus der Nähe sehen konnten.

ABP 2015: Week 18

Many Barn Swallows and around 30 Red-rumped Swallows were flying in the area around our station during the beginning of the week and we got one of this species in our mist nets with the result that we recorded another first-catch for the project: a Red-rumped Swallow. In the last years this species was seen so many times around the station, but it has never been caught before. Furthermore we even caught another individual, which accidently flew into our station. So the new team members also saw this species up close. Today we caught another new species for the project, which got us all over-excited: an Eurasian Three-toed Woodpecker (first record for Muraviovka Park!).

The new members of the team working for the project are Nadja and Maria, students of the University of Potsdam, Martin from the University of Natural Resources and Life Science in Vienna and Silas, a student from the Westfählische Wilhelms-University. For all of them it is the first time here in the park except Maria, she already was here working for the project last September. Unfortunately last Sunday Svetlana had to leave us. Due to our voluntaries we observed more birds as for example Grey-capped Pygmy Woodpecker, Jungle Nightjar, Common Gull, Eastern Marsh Harrier, Greated Spotter Eagle, Eastern-Buzzard, two Ashy Minivet around our station and two Black-crowned Night Herons (another first for the Park!), and we started the night controls. We caught in the night a Nothern Long-eard Owl, one Eurasian Skylark and one Siberian Rubythroat. But the daily Crane-counts were very successful. We noticed in the first four days up to 736 Hooded Cranes, 218 White-naped Cranes and the occasional Common Crane, which were migrating from the fields to the wetlands, as well as Red-crowned Crane. Sergej Smirenski is searching for Cranes every morning and Martin took the opportunity to go with him in one morning. They not just discovered Cranes, but also Japanese Quail, Northern Hobby and one Upland Buzzard.

Strong north winds brought us the first Pallas´s Leaf Warbler, one early Japanese Waxwing, Little Buntings, Swinhoe´s Robins, Mugimaki Flycatchers and Hawfinchs. As well as the first Grey-backed Thrush and some Pipits like Richard´s Pipit, Red-throated Pipit and Olive-backed Pipit, which migrate over the park area in the direction of south.

The season in this August was substandard with 1001 caught birds, but we expect in the next days a higher immigration rate, because the last day we caught a higher quantity of birds.

Anfang dieser Woche tummelten sich viele Rauchschwalben und rund 30 Rötelschwalben um die Station und einer dieser Art ging uns ins Netz, sodass wir einen weiteren Erstfang für unser Projekt verzeichnen konnten, die Rötelschwalbe. So oft wurde die Art rund um die Station in den letzten Jahren gesehen, jedoch hat sie sich noch nie in den Netzen verfangen. Außerdem konnten wir eine zweite Rötelschwalbe, die sich in unsere Beringungsstation verirrt hat, fangen. Dadurch konnten auch die neuen Mitglieder des September-Teams eine Rötelschwalbe aus nächster Nähe betrachten. Heute konnten wir eine neue Art für das Projekt fangen, der im Team für ausgedehnte Begeisterung sorgen konnte: der Dreizehenspecht (Erstnachweis für den Muraviovka Park!). Zum Team hinzugekommen sind Nadja und Maria, Studentinnen der Universität Potsdam, Martin aus Österreich von der Universität für Bodenkultur in Wien und Silas von der Universität Westfählische Wilhelms-Universität. Alle sind zum ersten Mal beim Projekt dabei außer Maria, die bereits im letzten September im Park war. Svetlana musste uns letzten Sonntag leider verlassen. Durch unsere Neuzugänge konnten wir mehr Vögel beobachten als in den vorherigen Wochen wie Grauscheitelspecht, Dschungelnachtschwalbe, Sturmmöwe, Mangrovenweihe, Japanbussard, Schelladler, zwei Graumennigvögel, die um unsere Station flogen, und zwei über den Sumpf fliegende Nachtreiher (ebenfalls Erstnachweis im Park!) und wir konnten die ersten Nachtkontrollen durchführen, in der wir bis jetzt eine Waldohreule, eine Feldlerche und ein Rubinkehlchen fangen konnten. Dafür sind die täglichen Kranich-Zählungen erfolgreicher. In den ersten vier Tagen konnten wir jeden Abend bis zu 736 Mönchskraniche, 218 Weißnackenkraniche und einige Graue Kraniche, die von den Feldern in den Sumpf fliegen, und Mandschurenkraniche beobachten. Sergej Smirenski ist jeden Morgen auf der Suche nach Kranichen und so konnte Martin an einem Morgen die Gelegenheit nutzen, mit ihm auf Exkursion zu gehen. Dabei entdeckten sie nicht nur Kraniche, sondern auch Japanwachtel, Baumfalke und einen Mongolenbussard.

Starke Nordwinde brachten uns den ersten Goldhähnchen-Laubsänger, einen frühen Blutseidenschwanz, Zwergammern, Schwirrnachtigall, Mugimakischnäpper und Kernbeißer. Außerdem gab es die ersten Amurdrosseln und einige Pieper, wie Spornpieper, Rotkehlpieper und Waldpieper, die rufend über unsere Station in Richtung Süden zogen.

Der August war dieses Jahr mit 1001 Fängen etwas unterdurchschnittlich. Es ist aber in den nächsten Tagen eine ansteigende Migrationsbewegung zu erwarten. Bereits der heutige Morgen brachte deutlich mehr Beringungen ein.
