ABP 2017: Week 5

massive destruction along Argusicha river in the north of the Park © Arend Heim
The last week started with an unpleasant surprise: huge parts of the protected area were ploughed and turned into agricultural fields. These former steppe areas in the north hosted numerous Japanese Quails Coturnix japonica, Richard´s Pipits Anthus richardi, Chestnut-eared Buntings Emberiza fucata as well as some Yellow-breasted Buntings E. aureola, which most likely already had started to build their nests. The pressure on the Park´s land is high, since the soil is very good for growing soy beans, which is of high economic value for the region. At the very moment it is unclear what is happening next, and if the responsible farm can be charged in any way.
Isa, Tim, Jennifer and Mickael had a rather calm week at the ringing station, few birds were trapped, and not many new species arrived. However, three Siberian Blue Robins Luscina cyane (all females) were ringed, as well as a Eurasian Hobby Falco subbuteo. Furthermore, they caught a species which never before got entangled in our mist-nets: Feral Pigeon Columba livia f. domestica. A Black-naped Oriole Oriolus chinensis is singing now in the summer camp, and the first Chestnut-flanked White-eyes Zosterops erythropleura were heard. We were also happy about the second and third record of Black-crowned Night Heron Nycticorax nycticorax for the Park, and that several pairs of Coot Fulica atra and two pairs of Red-necked Grebe Podiceps grisegena were found. The two latter species were common breeders in the past but disappeared for unknown reasons.
Arend has finished the second count of all our 75 points for the breeding bird monitoring, while Alex has mapped more than 180 Yellow-breasted Bunting territories by now. The total number of re-sighted colour-ringed males has climbed up to 8 out of 19, an astonishingly good return rate. However, I was less successful in re-trapping them. At least two more tagged Rubythroats Luscinia calliope got caught.
Tom has found several new territories of the Swinhoe´s Rail Coturnicops exquisitus, and managed to catch and ring four birds. He has built automatic recording devices that are placed every night in different parts of the Park to record the nocturnal rail concert. The first Schrenck´s Bittern Ixobrychus eurhytmus, Band-bellied Crakes Porzana paykulli and Yellow-legged Buttonquails Turnix tanki have started to call as well. Our aim is to estimate the abundance of this secretive birds, since they are not properly monitored by our standard point counts.
On Saturday, Yury and Dima came with a group of the Blagoveshchensk Pedagogical University (BGPU) to help the Park. Together we painted the shower cabins and prepared the camp for the upcoming summer schools. Time is flying by!

ABP 2017: Week 4

Brown Shrikes have arrived © Mickael Fivat
This week started excellent when Laszlo spotted a migrating Siberian Crane Leucogeranus leucogeranus over the ringing station on Monday morning. This is the first spring record of this rare bird within the Amur Bird Project. So after the Baer´s Pochard Aythya baeri a week ago the lucky team at the ringing station has seen both critically endangered species that occur at Muraviovka Park. Wow! Meanwhile, I was in Blago to pick up the new team – four came by plane from Germany, and Jennifer came by ferry across the Amur river. Finally, our first Chinese project participant! On the airport, we visited a colony of House Martins Delichon spec. – some birds showed whitish underwings, other birds were dark below and many birds gave a mixed impression – I´m very happy to get your comments on the ID of this birds (dasypus vs. lagopodum).
Back at the Park, the mist-nets were full of birds – many flycatchers (Taiga Ficedula albicilla, Mugimaki F. mugimaki, Yellow-rumped F. xanthopygia, Grey-streaked Muscicapa griseisticta + Asian Brown Flycatcher M. dauurica observed) and numerous leaf warblers (seven species ringed and Eastern Crowned Warbler Phylloscopus coronatus heard). However, most impressive were most likely the bright males of Chestnut Bunting Emberiza rutila and White-throated Rock Thrush Monticola gularis. Furthermore, the cuckoos have arrived – we heard Common Cuculus canorus, Indian C. micropterus and Oriental Cuckoo C. optatus. And when it darkens, Oriental Scops Owl Otus sunia and Grey Nightjar Caprimulgus jotaka are calling in the summer camp. Many Whimbrel Numenius phaeopus were migrating, and in one flock we found a Little Curlew N. minutus among them – the second record within the project. Another rare sighting was that of a Coot Fulica atra – once a common breeder here but nowadays a vagrant. In the wetlands, Black-browed Acrocephalus bistrigiceps and Oriental Reed Warblers A. orientalis as well as Lanceolated Warblers Locustella lanceolata started singing. Arend continues now the breeding bird counts, and he is also working on a detailed vegetation map of Muraviovka Park. Tom will study again the abundance and habitat requirements of rails, and on his first evening after arrival he found already two Swinhoe´s Rails Coturnicops exquisitus. Isa and Tim work together with Alex and me on habitat use and survival of the five bunting species that occur here in sympatry. So far, we mapped more than 100 territories and re-located seven colour-ringed Yellow-breasted Buntings Emberiza aureola (including one female!), two Chestnut-eared Buntings E. fucata and one Japanese Reed Bunting E. yessoensis. At least two of the colour-ringed Siberian Rubythroats Luscinia calliope have also returned, and we were very happy to retrieve the first data logger. A highly productive week with a huge team. But on Sunday, Erna and Laszlo had to leave – thank you very much for taking care of the ringing station during the past weeks!
