ABP 2015: Week 8

Oriental Cuckoo (left) and Common Cuckoo (right) © Paul Bauer
Mass migration at Muraviovka Park! Strong winds blowed hundreds of birds in our mist-nets during the last week. Most of them were Yellow-browed Warblers, but we also ringed the first Arctic and Pale-legged Leaf Warblers. Even more exciting were the numerous Common and Oriental Cuckoos, and for the very first time a Eurasian Collared Dove was trapped. Furthermore we ringed the projects third Japanese Sparrowhawk and White-throated Rock Thrush as well as the 5th and 6th Eyebrowed Thrush. At the end of the week the Reed Warblers arrived: Black-browed and Oriental Reed Warblers as well as Thick-billed Warblers were noticed. The number of trapped Brown Shrikes increases day by day - quite bad for bird ringers hands. But spectacular for all the visitors, that came to our ringing station during the last week. Natalia Alexandrovna brought school classes from the region, and on the weekend groups of Chinese and Russian students came for a visit. The teacher´s students of the Pedagocial University from Blago came for two days, so they had some time to work with us and the birds. But they also painted, cleaned and prepared the summer camp cabins. A wonderful and productive weekend, thanks to our friend Yuriys organisation.
We also had some time for our breeding surveys and excursions to other parts of the Park. Large flocks of Pacific Golden Plovers were found on the fields, and the projects first Ruff as well as good numbers of Whimbrel and Far Eastern Curlew were seen. Among the latter, Muraviovka Park´s first Eurasian Curlew was spotted. Another first record for the Park was the Black-necked Grebe that was found on Peschanoie Lake - probably one of the northernmost records of this species in East Asia. Small flocks of Lesser White-fronted Geese and Baikal Teal were still present around Lebedinoe Lake in the North of the Park. In the South we found breeding Black-headed Gulls and Common Terns of the subspecies longipennis as well as numerous White-winged Terns. More and more territories are occupied by the Yellow-breasted Bunting, and we managed to color-ring the first individuals. This will allow us to collect data on philopatry, habitat use and survival rate without having to re-trap the endangered birds. In the next weeks, we are going to concentrate our work on this species - as well as on our search for Baer´s Pochard...

ABP 2015: Week 7

Oriental Stork escaping from its nest while the fire comes closer © Wieland Heim

Muraviovka Park on fire! On Monday, the 11th of May, we observed a fire in the southwest of the  Park. Since the wind blowed strong from the same direction, the flames came quickly closer. Together with staff and friends of the Park we managed to stop the fire in the reed beds along Kapustikha Lake, and in the evening we got help from 15 firefighters. Together we put out the blaze until 22:00, and the next morning rain started. Luckily, all nests of the Oriental Stork have been safed, as well as all breeding territories of the Red-crowned Crane. Two pairs of White-naped Cranes probably lost their nests, as well as many ducks. Much of the breeding habitat of the endangered Yellow-breasted Bunting was destroyed, too. Fires occur almost every year in the region, and they are 100% man-made. They are the biggest threat for breeding cranes, storks and other rare bird species.
Many birds are feeding now on the burned areas, like Hooded Cranes and Pacific Golden Plovers. Some late Greater White-fronted Geese migrated through, and two Lesser White-fronted Geese were found in the south of the Park. On Arbusicha river there was still a flock of 80 Baikal Teals, and around 50 of this beautiful and threatened species stayed on Kapustikha Lake in front of the headquarters today. We were also lucky to spot a pair of the Red-breasted Merganser, a very scarce migrant. The first White-winged Terns showed up, but due to the low water levels they might not breed here this year.
Because of the fire and the rainy days afterwards, we did not ring many birds. Noteworthy was the 4th record of the Eyebrowed Thrush for Muraviovka Park, and a nice male Tristram´s Bunting.
On Friday, the faculty of German language at the Blagoveshchensk Pedadgogical University celebrated its 60th anniversary with a great concert. We prepared some traditional German songs (all dealing with birds) and changed Dschingis Khan´s famous "Moskau" into a Blago hymn. I hope the cooperation between the BGPU and our project will last long!
