ABP 2015: Week 8

Mass migration at Muraviovka Park! Strong winds blowed hundreds of birds in our mist-nets during the last week. Most of them were Yellow-browed Warblers, but we also ringed the first Arctic and Pale-legged Leaf Warblers. Even more exciting were the numerous Common and Oriental Cuckoos, and for the very first time a Eurasian Collared Dove was trapped. Furthermore we ringed the projects third Japanese Sparrowhawk and White-throated Rock Thrush as well as the 5th and 6th Eyebrowed Thrush. At the end of the week the Reed Warblers arrived: Black-browed and Oriental Reed Warblers as well as Thick-billed Warblers were noticed. The number of trapped Brown Shrikes increases day by day - quite bad for bird ringers hands. But spectacular for all the visitors, that came to our ringing station during the last week. Natalia Alexandrovna brought school classes from the region, and on the weekend groups of Chinese and Russian students came for a visit. The teacher´s students of the Pedagocial University from Blago came for two days, so they had some time to work with us and the birds. But they also painted, cleaned and prepared the summer camp cabins. A wonderful and productive weekend, thanks to our friend Yuriys organisation.
We also had some time for our breeding surveys and excursions to other parts of the Park. Large flocks of Pacific Golden Plovers were found on the fields, and the projects first Ruff as well as good numbers of Whimbrel and Far Eastern Curlew were seen. Among the latter, Muraviovka Park´s first Eurasian Curlew was spotted. Another first record for the Park was the Black-necked Grebe that was found on Peschanoie Lake - probably one of the northernmost records of this species in East Asia. Small flocks of Lesser White-fronted Geese and Baikal Teal were still present around Lebedinoe Lake in the North of the Park. In the South we found breeding Black-headed Gulls and Common Terns of the subspecies longipennis as well as numerous White-winged Terns. More and more territories are occupied by the Yellow-breasted Bunting, and we managed to color-ring the first individuals. This will allow us to collect data on philopatry, habitat use and survival rate without having to re-trap the endangered birds. In the next weeks, we are going to concentrate our work on this species - as well as on our search for Baer´s Pochard...

Massenzug im Muraviovka Park! Starke Winde bliesen uns in der letzten Woche hunderte Vögel in unsere Netze. Die meisten davon waren Gelbbrauen-Laubsänger, doch wir konnten auch die ersten Wander- und Ussurilaubsänger beringen. Noch spannender waren aber die zahlreichen Kuckucke und Hopfkuckucke, als auch die erste jemals hier beringte Türkentaube. Außerdem gingen uns zum dritten Mal im Rahmen des Projekts Trillersperber und Amurrötel ins Netz, und wir fingen die fünfte und sechste Weißbrauendrossel. Am Ende der Woche kamen die Rohrsänger an: Brauen-, China- und Dickschnabel-Rohrsänger wurden festgestellt. Die Braunwürger werden nun immer häufiger - weniger gut für die Beringerhände. Aber spektakulär für all die Besucher, die in der letzten Woche unsere Station aufsuchten. Natalia Alexandrowna kam mit Schulklassen aus der Region, und am Wochenende kamen chinesische und russische Studenten. Die Lehramts-Studenten der Pädagogischen Universität aus Blago blieben für zwei Tage, sodass sie die Gelegenheit hatten, aktiv an unseren Forschungsprojekten teilzunehmen. Außerdem bereiteten sie die Sommercamphütten vor, räumten auf, putzten und strichen. Ein wunderbares und produktives Wochenende, besten Dank an unseren Freund Jurij für die Organisation.
Außerdem hatten wir Zeit für unsere Brutvogelerfassungen und unternahmen Exkursionen in andere Teile des Muraviovka Parks. Auf den Feldern rasten nun große Trupps von Pazifischen Goldregenpfeifern, und wir entdeckten zum ersten Mal auch einen Kampfläufer. Viele Brachvögel waren ebenfalls unterwegs, vor allem Regenbrachvögel und einige Isabellbrachvögel. Darunter entdeckten wir auch einen Großen Brachvogel - der erste Nachweis für den Park. Ebenfalls ein Erstnachweis war der Schwarzhalstaucher, der sich auf dem Pestschanoie See aufhielt. Dies ist wahrscheinlich einer der nördlichsten Nachweise dieser Art in Ostasien. Am Lebedinoe See im Norden des Parks waren immer noch kleinere Trupps von Zwerggänsen und Gluckenten zu beobachten. Im Süden fanden wir brütende Lachmöwen und Flussseeschwalben der Unterart longipennis als auch zahlreiche Weißflügel-Seeschwalben. Immer mehr besetzte Reviere der Weidenammer wurden erfasst, und endlich gelang es uns auch, die ersten Individuen mit individuellen Farbring-Kombinationen zu markieren. Das ermöglicht es uns, Daten zu Reviertreue, Habitatnutzung und Überlebensrate zu sammeln, ohne die gefährdeten Tiere nochmals fangen zu müssen. In den nächsten Wochen werden wir uns auf die Arbeit mit dieser Art konzentrieren, als auch unsere Suche nach der Baerente fortführen...
