Week 28

This is my farewell-posting - after seven months at Muraviovka Park it was time for me to return back to Germany. But the last days have been quite spectacular! After all this rain during last week weather finally turned fine since Sunday night and we were able to use the tape-lure during all nights, which enabled us to ring over 500(!) Siberian Rubythroats as well as some more Jungle Nightjars and Long-eared Owls. Amazing were also the first Japanese Sparrowhawk in our nets and the second Eyebrowed Thrush for the Park. Up to 1000 ducks are gathering now in front of the headquarters - among them now also the first Baikal Teals. So Christine, Viktoria and Simon had a real good timing when they arrived on Monday. Together with Pia, Janina and Susanne they will continue the Amur Bird Project throughout the next weeks - and you will still find weekly news right here. Arend and I left the Park on Friday and used our last days in Blago to prepare the new project-video with Juliana, which you will find here soon, too. So - stay tuned!

Dies ist nun mein letzter Blogeintrag - nach sieben Monaten im Muraviovka Park war es nun an der Zeit für mich, zurück nach Deutschland zu fliegen. Dabei waren die letzten Tage nochmal richtig aufregend! Nach all den Regentagen zuvor wurde das Wetter ab Sonntag endlich richtig gut und wir konnten jede Nacht die Klangattrappe zum Fang einsetzen. Dies ermöglichte uns, mehr als 500(!) Rubinkehlchen sowie weitere Dschungelnachtschwalben und Waldohreulen zu beringen. Das Beringerherz höher schlagen ließ außerdem ein Trillersperber - der erste in unseren Netzen - als auch der zweite Nachweis der Weißbrauendrossel für den Park. Auf den Seen vor unserer Station sammeln sich nun bis zu 1000 Enten - darunter auch die ersten Gluckenten. Christine, Viktoria und Simon kamen also genau im richtigen Moment hier am Montag an. Zusammen mit Pia, Janina und Susanne werden sie das Amur Bird Project in den nächsten Wochen fortführen - und es wird nach wie vor wöchentliche Berichte im Blog geben. Arend und ich verließen den Park am Freitag und nutzen unsere letzten Tage in Blago um das neue Projekt-Video mit Juliana vorzubereiten, welches bald hier zu finden sein wird. Es bleibt also spannend!

Week 27

The first good week of autumn migration! Hooded Cranes are coming more and more day by day, and ducks gathered on the lakes, including a nice flock of eight Eastern Spot-billed Ducks - a Red-List-species in the Amur region! Raptors are also on the move, like Pied Harrieres, Black-eared Kites, the first Eastern Common Buzzard as well as Osprey, Greater Spotted Eagle and Northern Goshawk. And on wires between the Park´s headquarters and Kurapatina village (c. 17 km) we counted 59(!) Amur Falcons. Most common in our mist-nets was the Yellow-browed Warbler, but there have been some really good catches amongst them - like an Siberian Bush Warbler, which is only the second record for this species at Muraviovka Park (the first bird was trapped by us in September 2011). We were also happy about ringing the first rails and getting at least one of each Red-throated and Olive-backed Pipits. A Japanese Quail was also picked out of the nets for the very first time. But what about the flood? Water levels are decreasing since the beginning of the week, even if we had heavy rain from Thursday evening non-stop until Sunday morning. The main road to Blago is still closed, but there is a road through Tambovka village. This allowed the Park´s president Sergei M. Smirenski to arrive with guests from Moscow. Unfortunately some of the people who planned to work within our project already cancelled their trips because of the unclear situation. This again was one reason why I had to stay and could not fly to Yushno-Sachalinsk, where I planned to present our work at the international conference Avian migrants in the Northern Pacific. But hopefully soon we will come back to normality - and to say something positive about the water: the chance for a wild fire was never that low.

Die erste Woche mit spannendem Herbstzug! Mönchskraniche kommen täglich mehr und mehr, und Enten sammeln sich auf den Seen - darunter unter anderem ein Trupp von acht Fleckschnabelenten, einer Roten-Liste-Art hier im Amurgebiet! Greifvögel sind nun auch unterwegs, so zum Beispiel Elsterweihen und Schwarzohrmilane, aber auch der erste Japanbussard, Fischadler, Schelladler und Habicht. Und auf Stromleitungen zwischen dem Park und dem Dorf Kurapatina (ca. 17 km) zählten wir 59(!) Amurfalken. In unseren Netzen waren die Gelbbrauen-Laubsänger am häufigsten, aber auch einige spannendere Fänglinge waren dabei - wie ein Baikal-Buschsänger, der zweite Nachweis dieser Art im Muraviovka Park (den ersten hatten wir im September 2011 gefangen). Wir konnten uns außerdem über die ersten Rallen freuen und beringten zumindest je einen Rotkehl- und Waldpieper. Außerdem ging uns zum allerersten Mal eine Japanwachtel ins Netz. Und das Hochwasser? Seit Anfang der Woche geht der Wasserstand zurück, und das obwohl es von Donnerstag Abend bis Sonntag Morgen ununterbrochen regnete. Die Hauptstraße nach Blago ist nach wie vor nicht befahrbar, aber es gibt einen anderen Weg über das Dorf Tambovka. Das ermöglichte Sergei M. Smirenski, dem Präsidenten des Parks, gemeinsam mit Gästen aus Moskau herzukommen. Unglücklicherweise hatten unsere Projekt-Teilnehmer, die diese Woche kommen wollten, ihre Reisepläne schon geändert, da die Flutsituation zu unsicher war. Dies war dann auch einer der Gründe, warum ich meine Reise nach Yushno-Sachalinsk absagen musste - dort wollte ich unser Projekt auf der internationalen Tagung Avian migrants in the Northern Pacific vorstellen. Aber bald können wir hier hoffentlich zur Normalität zurückkehren - das Gute an den Wassermengen ist: die Brandgefahr war nie geringer.
