ABP 2015: Week 15

Since this week we have a  spotting scope to search for more birds in the swamps and on the lake. We could see more ducks than last week like Gadwell, Common Teal and Eastern Spot-billed Duck. Furthermore we observed Pacific Swifts and Common Snipes, which  were migrating south and more than 50 White-winged Terns, which gathered around the lake. The migration towards south seems to begin.
We caught birds from many different species although the total number of birds stayed low because of hot temperatures. However, we discovered at two days a Far Eastern Curlew, flying over our station. This species is globally endangered but has been seen several times the last years in the park.

Next week we can use the car to make some excursions to look for more species. Additionally Svetlana wants to research about the biodiversity of species in the hole park for her bachelor thesis.

News about our researchers cabin: the building permission is still not ready yet, so it is possible that the start of construction of our cabin can delay until next year.

Seit dieser Woche haben wir ein Spektiv, um die Vögel im Sumpf und auf dem See zu beobachten. Dadurch konnten wir auch Fleckschnabel-, Krick- und Schnatterenten feststellen. Pazifiksegler und Bekassinen, die nach Süden gezogen sind und mehr als 50 Weißflügelschwalben, die sich über dem See gesammelt haben, konnten wir außerdem beobachten. So langsam scheint der Vogelzug Richtung Süden zu beginnen.
Des Weiteren haben wir diese Woche viele verschiedene Vogelarten gefangen. Leider blieb der große Fangerfolg aufgrund von heißen Temperaturen aus. Ansonsten konnten wir an zwei Tagen einen Isabellbrachvogel beobachten. Diese Art gilt als weltweit gefährdet, wurde aber in den letzten Jahren hier im Park immer wieder beobachtet.

Ab nächster Woche können wir das Auto nutzen, um einige Exkursionen zu machen, damit Svetlana in ihrer Bachelorarbeit die Artenvielfalt im gesamten Park genauer untersuchen kann.

Es gibt Neuigkeiten bezüglich der geplanten Beringungsstation. Die Baugenehmigungen wurden leider noch nicht erteilt und deswegen könnte sich der Baubeginn bis nächstes Jahr hinziehen.

ABP 2015: Week 14

The autumn-season at Muraviovka Park has just begun. Based on delays with our invitations to get the visa, just two helpers arrived at the park. The members of the team in August are Christoph, Svetlana, who are both the first time here, and me. Christoph is a bachelor-student at the Georg-August-University in Göttingen. I´m glad that Svetlana is helping us. She is studying geography in Saint Petersburg at the Herzen-University and she will write her bachelor thesis about the role of Muraviovka Park for saving the biodiversity of the Amur region. 

Thanks a lot to Yuri Schpak, who kindly carried us to the park. Unfortunately, we have no spotting scope this week, in order to be able to identify the ducks on the lake nor storks, herons, egrets and cranes in the swamps. We saw Great Crested Grebe, Little Grebe, Great Cormorant, Mallard, Eurasian Wigeon and Common Goldeneye on the lake. In the swamps we discovered some Red-crowned Crane, White-naped Crane, Grey Heron and Oriental White Stork.

On Thursday we started mist-netting. In the beginning the number of catched birds were low because of warm temperature and temporary rain showers, But finally, after a change of weather, we had a successful Sunday with a higher diversity and number of birds and also a new catch for the Amur Bird Project, a juvenile Collared Sand Martin. So we are looking forward for more birds the next weeks. 

Die Herbstsaison im Muraviovka Park hat begonnen. Leider konnten aufgrund zeitlicher Verzögerungen mit den Einladungen für unsere Visa nur zwei Helfer in den Park kommen. Das August-Team besteht aus Christoph, Svetlana, die jeweils zum ersten Mal beim Projekt dabei sind, und mir. Christoph ist Bachelorstudent an der Georg-August-Universität in Göttingen. Zum Glück hilft uns Svetlana, die in Sankt Petersburg an der Herzen Universität studiert. Sie wird ihre Bachelorarbeit über die Rolle des Muraviovka Parks als Naturschutz-Gebiet schreiben.

Ein großes Dankeschön an Juri Schpak, der uns freundlicher Weise in den Park gefahren hat. In dieser Woche hatten wir leider kein Spektiv, um die Enten auf dem See bzw. um die Schreit- und Kranichvögel im Sumpf zu identifizieren. Wir konnten auf dem See Hauben- und Zwergtaucher, Kormorane, Stock-, Pfeif-, und Schellenten, entdecken und im Sumpf Mandschuren-, Weißennackenkraniche, Graureiher und Schwarzschnabelstörche.

Am Donnerstag haben wir mit dem Fangen begonnen. Aufgrund von wärmeren Temperaturen und kurzzeitigen Regenschauern blieben die Fangzahlen in den ersten Tagen niedrig. Am letzten Tag der Woche stieg jedoch die Vielfalt und Anzahl der gefangenen Vögel, da es zu einem Wetterumschwung kam. Außerdem konnten wir einen Erstfang innerhalb des Amur Bird Projects feststellen, eine juvenile Uferschwalbe. Wir freuen uns auf die nächsten Wochen mit vielen Vögeln.

László Bozó with an Artic Warbler at Muraviovka Park, September 2014

I´m happy to announce that the latest issue of BirdingAsia, the bulletin of the Oriental Bird Club, contains two articles based on the work of the Amur Bird Project at Muraviovka Park.

One paper describes the northward range extension of two wetland species:

And László finished his master thesis - all of the results are going to be published soon. This first article now deals with the migration of the Pale-legged Leaf Warbler.

You should also check out the beautiful movie (in 3 chapters) “Amur - Asiens Amazonas” about the Amur River watershed filmed by F. Haffner in Russia, China, and Mongolia. So far it is only available in German. Some of the material was taken at Muraviovka Park...who will find it?

Last but not least I want to present an interesting link to the site of the Amur Red Data Book. For all bird species listed you will find information about their occurence in the Amurskaya Oblast and a map. Those maps have to be taken with care, but at least they are more up-to-date for that part of the world than the widely used maps by Birdlife International or even those in Mark Brazil´s "Birds of East Asia". One good example is the Japanese Reed Bunting. But of course, its only in Russian.

ABP 2015: Weeks 12 and 13

One thing that I had to learn in Russia was to wait. You always have to wait for anything or anybody. During our last weeks here at Muraviovka Park we had plenty opportunities to practice the art of waiting. Our car had some serious problems, and we were waiting all the week to get it fixed. In the end, our friend Yuriy helped us to get a rental car in Blago, to continue our surveys. But before, we walked almost 100km through the vast wetlands of the Park, trying to color-ring more Yellow-breasted Buntings. We spent many days waiting for one of the rare birds flying into our nets, but without any efforts. They are breeding now and showed no more reaction to tape lure – at least we re-read some of our previously marked individuals. Within our lake survey we counted breeding waterbirds at more than 80 lakes and water bodies along the middle Amur river until now – but sadly without any single sighting of the long-awaited Baer´s Pochard. Close to the site, where we observed a female in June 2013 (see here), a pair of Tufted Ducks was present during the last weeks. This species has not been recorded during breeding season in former years. Common Moorhen and Little Grebe were also found at several sites, both of them colonized the Amur region during the last decade (publication in press). We were also lucky to find a large mixed-species flock of cranes, storks and herons, foraging in the south of the Park. It included at least 66 White-naped, 12 Hooded and 5 Red-crowned Cranes. And on fields near Kurapatino village we observed 87 (!) Hooded Cranes together with 3 Eurasian Cranes. Such accumulations are unusual during that time of the year, most likely those are immature birds or pairs without breeding success. At Peschanoie Lake we found a similar gathering of around 180 Great Cormorants, also non-breeders. Good numbers of Falcated Ducks were observed, too – 31 males at a site within Muraviovka Park, 22 males near Lermontovka village and around 10 at Tambovka lake. At this shallow reservoir we also found a pair of each Black-necked Stint and Eastern Black-tailed Godwit among several pairs of Northern Lapwing and Marsh Sandpiper. And finally, the first funny calls of the Indian Cuckoo were heard – a possible breeder at the Park, which might parasite on Brown Shrike or Siberian Stonechat.

Another thing that we are waiting for since many weeks is the building permission for the new researcher´s cabin. So far we received 2,500 Euro for that project – but we need at least 2,500 Euro more to cover our part of the costs. Please don´t wait and donate to help keeping the Amur Bird Project running!

Now we are back home in Germany, but the next ABP team will continue the work at Muraviovka Park in August. Stay tuned!

Eine Sache, die ich während meiner Arbeit in Russland lernen musste, ist die hohe Kunst des Wartens. Man muss quasi immer auf irgendetwas oder irgendjemanden warten. Während unserer letzten Woche im Muraviovka Park hatten wir wieder mannigfaltige Gelegenheiten, uns im Warten zu üben. Unser Lada hatte einige technische Probleme, und wir warteten die ganze Woche vergeblich auf die Reparatur. Am Ende half uns Juri, noch kurzfristig einen Mietwagen in Blago für den Abschluss unserer Untersuchungen zu bekommen. Zuvor legten wir jedoch nahezu 100 Kilometer zu Fuß durch die weitläufigen Feuchtgebiete des Parks zurück, um weitere Weidenammern mit Farbringen zu markieren. Viele Stunden und Tage des Wartens vergingen, ohne das einer der seltenen Vögel den Weg in unsere Netze fand. Offenbar sind die Weidenammern mit ihrer Brut beschäftigt, sodass sie keine Reaktion mehr auf unsere Klangattrappe zeigten. Immerhin konnten wir einige der zuvor beringten Individuen ablesen. Im Rahmen unserer Gewässerkartierung erfassten wir die Wasservogelbestände an über 80 Steh- und Fließgewässern, leider ohne eine einzige Beobachtung der lang erwarteten Baerente. Nahe der Stelle, an der wir im Juni 2013 ein Weibchen der extrem seltenen Art beobachteten (siehe hier), stellten wir nun ein Pärchen der Reiherente über mehrere Wochen hinweg fest. Diese Art wurde zuvor noch nicht während der Brutzeit festgestellt. Außerdem fanden wir Teichhühner und Zwergtaucher an mehreren Gewässern – beide Arten habe erst im letzten Jahrzehnt das Amurgebiet besiedelt (Publikation im Druck). Wir hatten außerdem das Glück, einen großen Trupp von Kranichen, Störchen und Reihern im Süden des Parks bei der Nahrungssuche zu beobachten. Wir zählten mindestens 66 Weißnacken-, 12 Mönchs- und 5 Mandschurenkraniche. Auf Feldern nahe des Dorfes Kurapatino fanden wir einen noch größeren Trupp von 87 (!) Mönchskranichen zusammen mit 3 (Eurasischen) Kranichen. Derartige Ansammlungen sind ungewöhnlich zur Brutzeit, höchstwahrscheinlich handelte es sich bei den Tieren um Nichtbrüter oder Paare ohne Bruterfolg. Am Peschanoie See konnten wir eine ähnliche Ansammlung von 180 Kormoranen feststellen, ebenfalls Nichtbrüter. Auch bei der Sichelente konnten wir gute Bestände erfassen: 32 Männchen an einem See im Park, 22 Männchen nahe Lermontovka und ungefähr 10 auf einem flachen Stausee bei Tambovka. Dort konnten wir überraschenderweise auch je ein Paar des Stelzenläufers und der Östlichen Uferschnepfe zwischen brütenden Kiebitzen und Teichwasserläufern feststellen. Endlich konnten wir auch den witzigen Gesang des Kurzflügelkuckucks vernehmen – je ein Männchen rief am Argusicha-Fluß und nahe unserer Station. Die Art brütet möglicherweise auch im Muraviovka Park, als Wirtsvogelarten für den Brutparasit kämen Braunwürger oder Sibirisches Schwarzkehlchen in Frage.

Eine andere Sache, auf die wir schon seit vielen Wochen warten, ist die Baugenehmigung für unsere neue Forschungsstation. Bisher haben wir 2500 Euro Spendengelder für das Projekt einwerben können, doch wir benötigen mindestens weitere 2500 Euro um unseren Anteil finanzieren zu können. Bitte nicht warten – spenden Sie, damit das Amur Bird Project weiterlaufen kann!
Mittlerweile sind wir alle wieder zurück in Deutschland, doch ab August wird das nächste ABP Team die Arbeit im Muraviovka Park fortführen.
